Permafrost is ground, including rock or (cryotic) soil, at or below the freezing point of water. In this project, freezing is a conceptual method for “holding” mater in time. Several different pieces are displaced in space. Through fragmentation, the detritus continuously fall in to a structure prepared with specific sensors. This platform works as a receptive field connected to a software that interprets impact, time, weight and displacement of the detritus. As the piece evolves through time the matter accumulates generating not only a sculptural chance disposition, but unpredictable reactions in the sensors. Permafrost lives from a mesh landscape of organisms that keep playing with movement and suggestion, this unstable geography departs from the observation of the Natural world in to the realms of data manipulation. Notions of instability, memory and chance go in to interplay in a durational installation.
This piece has been awarded by ENCAC grant for the production of a new groundbreaking audiovisual installation and will be presented 28 june at Laboral Centro de Arte in Gijon, Spain. Project developed with the collaboration of Artist Adam Basanta.
